“We are thrilled to receive The Shipyards’ first Brownie Award in recognition of our commitment to the environment and the Collingwood community,” said Fred Serrafero. “We will be launching The Shipyards’ green space to the public this spring and it will be a great chance to celebrate this wonderful environmental milestone with our friends and neighbours.” Each year, the CUI’s Brownie Awards recognize leadership, innovation and environmental sustainability in brownfield redevelopment across Canada. The Shipyards was recognized for its commitment to environmental remediation, developing a clean site into a vibrant, mixed-use real estate project. Developers FRAM Building Group and Slokker Real Estate used the former brownfield site to create a sustainable and integrated real estate community with access to both the Georgian Bay waterfront and downtown Collingwood. The project, which will feature approximately 600 apartment and townhome condominiums upon completion, has also established a public green space for local events with an open-air amphitheatre, a wetland and fish habitat and pedestrian and bike trails that connect to the Niagara Peninsula. Methodology: For the Best Large-Scale Project category, nominees were judged based on their ability to feature high-quality urban design and public space; integrate functionally and visually into the local fabric; develop an innovative resolution of contamination issues; and stimulate broader economic regeneration. The CUI Brownie Awards jury is comprised of representatives from 10 professional and industrial associations. In addition to the Canadian Urban Institute and Canadian Brownfields Network, the jury includes representatives from the Canadian Institute of Planners/Ontario Professional Planners Institute; About Remediation; Ontario Centre for Environmental Technology Advancement; Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario; Federation of Canadian Municipalities; Building, Industry and Land Development; Ontario Association of Architects; and Natural Resources Canada. Finalists for this year’s CUI Brownie Awards represented six provinces – New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.
