As most of us transition from winter to summer in our planning for sports activities, so does Collingwood's Special Olympics community. Curling, figure skating and alpine skiing have ended their seasons, and 5 pin bowlers will attend their regional tournament later this month. A certain number of 5 pin bowling athletes will also represent the region at the Provincial Games in Durham in May.

Meanwhile, planning has started for the summer sports of softball and track and field.

Collingwood's Special Olympics track and field club boasts a successful history. The team has sent several members to past Provincial, National, and World Games, including the Worlds in Ireland in 2003. The potential for success remains, as all of the athletes remain dedicated to their sport. Running, jumping and throwing are the most basic of sports movements, and all three are focused on in this club along with encouragement of fitness and fun.

This season, the club is in need of a new head coach. The person in this position will ensure that the club has a facility at which to train, plan weekly practice sessions, maintain the club's equipment, and arrange for travel to regional competitions. Collingwood is in Region 6, which has a number of track clubs with which to network. There are also volunteer administrators in the community to provide support to the club.
For more information on becoming involved as a volunteer coach with Special Olympics in Collingwood, please contact District Developer Hellaina VanErp-Rothenburg at 705-739-0011 or email
