The eyes of the world will turn to our town as the Olympic Flame arrives in Collingwood as part of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, presented by Coca-Cola and RBC and supported by the Government of Canada.

Excitement is building in Collingwood in preparation for the arrival of the Olympic Flame and everyone is invited to come out and cheer it on its journey to Vancouver.

On December 29th, we’re expecting hundreds of Collingwood residents and visitors to turn out for this emotional once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic Flame in person right here in our town and feel inspired by its universal message of peace, brotherhood and friendship.

The torch relay will arrive at approximately 9:30am as part of a convoy of vehicles, which will include torchbearer shuttles, media vehicles, relay support vehicles and police cruisers.  Temporary rolling road closures will ensure the safety of the torchbearers and spectators lining the relay route, which will be announced approximately two weeks before the flame arrives in our community.  The crowd will see a new torchbearer carry the flame every 300 metres through the community as it travels on its 45,000-kilometre-long journey across Canada — the longest domestic torch relay in Olympic history.

To celebrate the arrival of the flame, Collingwood is inviting all local youth to participate in our Torch Relay Community Celebration Contest

Did you know that the Olympic Torch Relay promotes the seven Olympic Values?  These are excellence, fun, fairness, respect, personal growth, leadership, and peace.  Show us how these same values are proudly displayed in our community.  Here are some ways you can do this:

Kindergarten to Grade 4 - Colour an Olympic Mascot!

Use your true colours to bring to life one of the 2010 Olympic mascots. Choose your favourite from the pictures attached, colour it using the medium of your choice, and submit your masterpiece for judging in person or by mail to The Station, 45 St. Paul Street, Box 157, Collingwood, ON L9Y 3Z5.  Or send us a digital photo of your picture to  Our favourite entries will be displayed in our Downtown windows, on our website, and on the town page of the Enterprise-Bulletin.

Kindergarten to Grade 8 - Create a Poster!

Put your creativity to the test and craft a poster highlighting how the Olympic values are showcased in our community. Be as creative as you’d like! Submit a digital image of your poster with your contact information for judging and be sure to bring your original along to cheer on the torch bearers on December 29th.

Grades 5 to 8 – Write a Poem!

With your words, capture the essence of The Olympic Torch Relay’s values.  Write a Poem, in any style that brings to light those core principles that are important in everyday life as well as in the Olympic spotlight. The winning poem will appear on the town’s website and be published on the town page of the Enterprise Bulletin.

Grades 9 to 12 – Make a Video!

Let your inner Spielberg loose and write, direct and produce your own video. Catch the Olympic spirit on camera by stressing how Olympic values are applied in our community everyday. Video must be less than 3min in length, and be in one of the following formats: MPEG4 (Divx or Xvid) at a 640x480 or 1024x768 resolution, Quicktime.MOV, Windows.AVI or .MPG and submitted on a disk or USB drive.  The winning video will be shown at the Torch Relay Celebration on December 29th and featured on the town’s website.

The first 100 contest entries will receive an official souvenir Torch Relay hand flag to be used to cheer on the torch relay as it comes through Collingwood.  Winners from each category will be presented with a gift card courtesy of Zellers Collingwood.

Deadline for submissions is December 22nd at 4:30pm.  Please include your name, grade and school, along with your home phone number and email.  Winners will be contacted on December 23rd and will be invited to present their winning submission on stage at the Torch Relay Celebration December 29th outside Town Hall.
