This summer - the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death - Theatre Georgian Bay is very excited to hold its inaugural "Bard on the Bay' outdoor Shakespeare performance in Collingwood with Twelfth Night on Sundays and Thursdays from July 17 to August 7.
Twelfth Night is a touching, hilarious comedy about the most famous love triangle ever written. Perfect for the entire family, this highly engaging piece by Theatre Georgian Bay will reach Shakespeare lovers and non-lovers alike. Featuring many familiar faces, Theatre Georgian Bay is a newly established professional theatre company that seeks to bring relevant, thought provoking and primarily Canadian theatre to the Georgian Bay region. The Collingwood based company will also tour their shows to communities along Georgian Bay at accessible prices.
"All of our Twelfth Night performances will be offered to the community as a pay-what-you-can event," says Director, Cam Oates. "We really want to create a show that allows for entire families to afford to see live theatre."
"All of our actors are professionals and working on a profit-share basis," says Producer, Nadia Mear. "The fact that we aren't charging an official ticket price for tickets means that the costs of supporting the production: rehearsal/performance space, sets, props, costumes, music etc. all have to be covered by sponsorship and fundraising. The town of Collingwood has been fabulous with their support." Beyond financial accessibility, Oates says this version of Twelfth Night will be easy for the audience to understand. "My goal is to take complex Shakespearean text and perform it so that even a six-year-old can follow it."
What you may not know is that most of the TGB company members have some sort of local connection. "This is a true community collaboration," says Oates. "We are a collective. We share the workload and the benefits that come along with putting on a show." Refreshments and snacks made by local Collingwood vendors will be available for sale at leisure before, during and after show.
"Tasty Thursdays" will feature pastry chef Top Shelf Bakery's whiskey tarts and fresh lemonade, "Sundae Afternoons" will offer The Sweet Shoppe's ice cream and "ShakesBEER Sunday Evenings" will alternate Side Launch and Collingwood Brewery beer.
